Family Time / Early Morning Devotions

We usually spend the weekend by my husband's family so that everyone can reconnect and spend time together.  This weekend was nothing different (well kind of, because we were really busy with errands etc.), but as usual, we had family devotions this morning.

I was always amazed at how my parents-in-law round up all the kids for devotions in the a.m., it is no easy feat, let me tell you!  But nonetheless, we all surround the dining room table and take turns reading scripture that we inquire, expound, and share our thoughts about.

I always felt that it was imperative for families to spend some sort of time together, and even more so religiously. I believe that sharing your faith strengthens familial bonds and builds a strong foundation.

Today, we went through Song of Solomon and it was a bit awkward at first because COME ON, the Jewish didn't allow their kids to read this book until they were 33 years old!!!!(It's like when you are enjoying a movie with your family and the inevitable love scene pops on...under normal circumstances, you would watch, but you avert your eyes and get so uncomfortable you talk to no one in particular and-- or is it only me?!?!?! Okay, nevermind...) Sooooo, technically, the only people old enough to crack the seal were my parents-in-law...LOL! But we were in an accepting environment, conducive for learning and sharing, and I gleaned so much as a 'disciple' and a married woman.

It is beautiful to see everyone reflecting liberally with no inhibitions, and sometimes it brings laughter to the frankness of the ideas that we put on the table. There is no judgement - but you better be able to back up what you say, because someone at the table is going to suppress their laughter just long enough to ask: "Why?"

As I get older, I understand how important it is to spend MORE time with family. Yes, you may live in the same house, and you may be blessed to see each other every day, but do you CONNECT with each other? We get so caught up in the requirements of life that we don't enjoy the simple things: an encouraging word, a hug, a light touch, smiles and laughter... Is it because we KNOW that we will see each other again soon? But then again, how can we be so sure? (All sentimentality aside...lol) I want to reiterate the fact that it is so important to share and glean religiously from your family - There is something about that exchange of faith that makes you feel that you can indeed face the world!

Hands up in gratefulness, heart full of adoration,

xoxo Jenna
